#LawUnleashed: Brighton
I have been rather quiet on the posting front in the past month, in part due to preparations for the first #LawUnleashed training session, which took place last Thursday evening in Brighton at the Friends Meeting House.
It was hosted by the Brighton Hove and District Leaseholders Association, of which more below. It was rather a hot and sultry evening, but, fuelled by jaffa cakes and tea, we settled in for an evening of service charge discussion.
I prepared handouts and notes, and planned to run through three main areas:
- The anatomy of a lease, and key points to look out for;
- Service charges and the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, and
- Court and tribunal procedure.
In the event, we covered the first and (most of the) third of these. We skipped the second and instead built in time for questions at the end. Those questions ranged from the recoverability of improvements, through trespass, to legal costs.
At the end of the evening, in addition to being full of tea and jaffa cakes, each attendee took away a hand-bound handout for future reference.
It was a good evening, but it did not end there.
The local community is an integral part of #LawUnleashed. I ask that each person attending a #LawUnleashed event makes a £10-£15 donation, which I then pass on to a local housing or homelessness charity.
On Friday morning, I was able to transfer £130.00 to the Clocktower Sanctuary, a Brighton-based charity which has, since 1998, been providing information, advice and support to young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who are homeless or insecurely housed.
I am supposed, by reason of my profession, to be articulate, but “Woohoo!” is the only word I can find to describe the excitement of seeing #LawUnleashed in action.
